Sundays done right – First you snooze, and then you booze

Do you eat out for breakfast? I don’t tend to but the Sunday ‘boozy brekky’ on offer at one of my local Canberra haunts, The Elk & Pea Eating House is definitely a breakfast indulgence worth leaving the house for.

A few weeks back the lovely folks at The Elk & Pea Eating House sent out an invitation to trial their new breakfast options and I eagerly volunteered the husband and myself to be ‘boozy brekky’ guinea pigs.

The Scene

Located smack bang in the middle of Canberra’s urban epicentre Lonsdale St, Braddon, the styling of Elk and Pea is quirky and sets the tone for a laid back meal. The interior is long and narrow with elk heads dotted throughout and framed artwork on the ceiling but I am a sucker for alfresco dining so have always opted to sit outside at one of the large communal tables in the front courtyard.

The Menu

Every Sunday from 8am – 3pm for the next little while you can get either of the two ‘boozy brekky’ options for $25.

Grande and a House Beer
‘Two eggs your way on sourdough toast with bacon, chorizo, mushrooms, spinach & black beans (veg. option available) + a house beer (which was a bottle of James Boag when we went)’

Smashed Avocado & Shrooms and a Mimosa
‘Thyme-butter mushrooms, smashed avocado, marinated feta, torn basil, poached egg on sourdough toast + mimosa cocktail (champagne and orange juice)’

The husband and I ordered one of each, I had the Smashed Avocado & Shrooms with a Mimosa and he happily ate every single last bit of the Grande with a House Beer. The service was quick and friendly and our drinks came out at lightning speed after ordering them with the meals taking about 20 minutes to arrive to the table.

Both of the servings were extremely generous and nobody will be leaving hungry after consuming an Elk and Pea boozy brekky. I could not finish my plate but I did gobble up all of the avocado and marinated feta (I love that combination).

The Verdict

I used to really enjoy going out for a boozy weekend breakfast when I lived in the States, it was a Sunday institution in all the major cities we visited and I am a little bit chuffed that The Elk and Pea Eating House is embracing the tradition. With the excited buzz in the air from the full house of Sunday diners and the ‘boozy brekky’ menu this is definitely the place for a grand, old catch up with friends.

Sunday for me is all about a little bit of indulgence before the working week ahead and what can be better than a little sleep-in followed by sitting at a table with a cocktail, eggs, and a group of friends discussing what happened the night or week before?

(Tip – Sundays are busy, busy, busy at Elk and Pea so be sure to book a table and ask about the weekend surcharges.)

That sounds like a brilliant idea! Especially now hubby will be (finally) working down here. I will have the time for catch ups on the weekend.
